It feels like an object, so learners reach for を. In Japanese 会う always takes に.

消える happens by itself; 消す is something you do. Japanese keeps that pair apart where many languages use one verb.

Plain form to someone senior sounds abrupt. Japanese switches politeness level with the person, not the topic.
What it watches for
Particles (は/が, に/で, を), verb pairs that look alike but differ in whether you did it or it happened, politeness level, and long vowels that change the word.
